20 Months!

Somehow I got away from doing monthly updates, but today Jake is 20 months, which I think warrants a blog post! I've been waiting for this month. I remember with Samantha that between 20-22 months her gross motor skills became much more steady and that we didn't have to be right on top of her at the playground. Jake is looking much more stable these days as well. He is up and down the stairs, climbing over furniture, running, and doing this funny half jump/skip on his tip toes.
Jake is talking a lot. He says something for almost every word, but I think that anyone else wouldn't really understand what he is trying to say. We can't even be sure 100% of the time what he is saying, but he is talking. When he isn't talking he is screaming. He is loud. If he doesn't get what he wants, he screams. Yesterday we were at the grocery store and Chris and I split up with one kid each and somehow whoever was with me ended up screaming and every time Chris could hear them clear across the store! I just kept shopping and acting like I didn't hear them screaming.
Jake takes after his dad when it comes to eating. He will be eating and slow down to the point where I think oh, he must be done eating. So, I got to wipe him up and all of a sudden he has more food in his hands. Then, 5 seconds later he is part of the clean plate club. Often times Jake will be done with his food and he'll finish off what Samantha didn't eat. He could literally sit at the table for 45 minutes eating because he just takes his good old time! I think he is in for a growth spurt because he has been sleeping and eating pretty well.
Jake is very interesting in sitting on the potty. I think that when Samantha toilet trains we will probably just go ahead and have Jake use the potty too because he just wants to do everything that his sister does! (just a side note that Samantha starts preschool tomorrow...the teachers said we should wait to do any potty training until she starts school and gets acclimated to her environment; so, I would say that at the end of February we will begin with potty training!)
I just can not believe that my little baby boy is going to be 2 in 4 months! One of our babysitters was here the other day and she was saying to Samantha that she had to go get the baby (Jake was waking up from a nap). Samantha said to her, "there are no babies here, just Jake and Jake is a big boy!"

*The photo above was taken at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. The kids and I went there last week to see the exhibit Fins and Feathers: Original Children's Book Illustrations from the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Overall I was disappointed in the exhibit, but the museum as a whole was very interesting. There was also an exhibit on Norman Rockwell and the chairs that the kids are sitting in above was a set up of the "Front Porch", which, like Rockwell's images, "takes you back to a simpler time, a world with fewer distractions, when life seemed to move a little more slowly."

The Porn Star Phenomenon

Poor old Tifatul Sembiring (AKA "TitS" for those of you who are yet to read my earlier posts on the man and his mission) has a problem with porn stars! I am not sure that the preceding statement needs any further clarification. Nevertheless, it is going to get one. It seems TitS has determined that hiring foreign porn stars to star in local horror movies is just another way that local film producers are going about poking fun at the moral standards held dear by Indonesians. The other problem that TitS seemingly has is that hiring international porn stars undermines his anti-porn message.

The recently released film "The Moans of a Virgin Ghost" (Rintihan Kuntilanak Perawan) which starred the [in]famous porn star Tera Patrick and the less famous Indonesian [porn star] wannabes of Catherine Wilson and Angelique came in for special mention by the poorly-performing Minister of Communication and Information.

The Minister has taken this film, and the bringing in of Tera Patrick to star in the film, way to personally. It really is not an attempt to either mock the Minister or to mock Indonesia's anti-pornography laws. According to TitS, Tera Patrick "personifies the resistance to morality". Nice call, Minister. So, self-confessed polygamists are not a moral challenge to the Indonesian community? Violence against women and children can take many forms. If one is going to campaign against moral evil, then it makes sense to line up all the morally reprehensible and deal with them all at once.

The exploitation of porn stars in non-porn roles, particularly big-name foreign porn stars such as Patrick, Miyabi (Maria Ozawa) and Rin Sakuragi is nothing more that smart marketing designed to generate as much cheap advertising as they can by orchestrating controversy. What is really sad is that the Minister and the FPI, among others, continue to fall for this viral marketing strategy.

But, thanks TitS, this would seem like a most gratuitous time to post more pictures of Tera Patrick in "all" her glory!

She must be wearing a different cut of swimmers to what she normally wears...

The show appeared in GQ magazine.

Hmmm...

Glee is a TV show that airs on Fox in the US. It is classed as a musical comedy-drama, and it follows the trials and tribulations of high school teenagers as they wend there collective ways through some good old teenage angst issues. Interesting a lot of the cast are not teenagers at all but adult actors playing the role of teenagers. Apart from being a pretty popular TV series, Glee has come in for some closer scrutiny after a recent photo-shoot of some of the 20-something actors (Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, and Corey Monteith) from the show appeared in GQ magazine.

The controversy arose because the Parents Television Council in the US has labelled the photos as "bordering on paedophilia". This in turn raises some interesting legal issues as to how one should proceed when adult age actors who are play the roles of teenagers then pose for sexy photos. Can the sexy photo of a 20+ something actor ever be an image that promotes pedophilia. It would seem that the assumption is that because these actors play the roles of not yet of age teenagers then any image of them that sexualises them is promoting pedophilia.

The reality is that if these young people use their fame to promote themselves through sexy photo-shoots, even ones that overtly sexualise them, don't they have a right to do it? After all, the people involved are all of legal age, and by any definition of the law have a right to make the decisions that they have. The photos themselves are not pornographic and do not violate any decency standards or norms for television or for print media.

Nevertheless, this is an interesting legal issue that extends beyond this particular instance. For example, can purveyors of porn be arrested and jailed for the upload / download of images of adults wearing, or part wearing of, school uniforms? In a lot of jurisdictions the law has been amended or worded in such a way as what the image attempts to convey or the content as being the key determiner in whether an image is classified as child porn.

So, simply if the point is to provide sexual gratification through the belief that one is looking at a naked or near naked child, even where the "child" in question is in fact an adult, then a crime has been committed. At least this is how I understand the law to work (time for more research and update myself on the laws in this area).

Therefore, if that interpretation of the law is accurate, then is it possible to mount a child porn case with images like the ones in GQ? I would argue not. Any reasonable person would know that the young people depicted in these images are adults and not children.

I am not sure how these particular photos promote pedophilia. I must be missing something.

Cut Tari made a skin flick

If something can be sad and funny at the same time, then this is it! Cut Tari made a skin flick. She was seemingly a willing partner in an amateur porn shoot in 2005 with the now infamous ladies man, Nazriel 'Ariel' Irham of Peterpan fame. By all accounts it was amateurish, which considering it was a handycam job, might not be far off the mark. Nevertheless, amateurish or not, it was sure to titillate the masses in Indonesia as getting a good look at the nether regions of celebrities is a pretty solid past time for some.

In any event, it would seem that making a porn film and being in a porn film are not illegal per se. This is true for the 2008 Anti-Pornography Law. Although the arguments being made by Cut Tari's lawyer, the 'I am everywhere you are', entertainment lawyer, Hotman Paris, rely on the inability of a 2008 law being applied retroactively to a sex video filmed in 2005. He has a point. Yet, it would seem that being naked in front of a digital camera probably falls under the indecency provisions (Art. 282) of the Criminal Code.

However, where this gets really sad is that the police and prosecutors are going all out to find laws to try and apply in this case. So, it was back into the archived Statute Books to play a little "pin the tail on the donkey". The end result was Law No. 1 of 1951, an emergency law that was enacted under a provisional Constitution and in 1951 Indonesia was tinkering with the way the Republic was to be governed. Nevertheless, Article 5(3) of Law No. 1/1951 has a nice 'catch all' element to it:

where an act is considered to be a crime, but where there is no relevant article in the Criminal Code prohibiting that act, then customary (traditional 'hukum adat') law can apply.

I wonder if the hukum adat that might apply here has any Sharia elements to it. Then again, both profess to not being able to remember where the film was shot. Maybe it was shot overseas and not even in the jurisdiction of Indonesia?

The cold hard reality for the coppers and the prosecutors here is that if you have to go back to a 1951 law that has not been used for this purpose previously then things are looking a little forlorn on the successful outcomes stakes. Let's face it, the drafters of the 1951 law hardly had amateur sex tapes at the forefront of their minds when drafting Article 5 of that law. It is a real stretch, drawing a long bow, if you prefer, to try an make this stick.

Final points...you really have to wonder why the police and prosecutors are persisting with this case. The again, if the SBY can railroad the DPR into approving a suspect candidate for Chief of Police, and the DPR can see no reason why the man who presided over the, still unexplained and unresolved, murder of Trisakti students in 1998 should not be Chief of Police, then what hope do a couple of amateur porn stars have?

Now for some obligatory pictures of Cut Tari...

Child Stars

Life used to be so much more simple when the conversation was really only about when to have that "talk". You know, the one about the birds and the bees. However, the conversation is no longer a conversation hut a fully-fledged debate, and perhaps rightly so. There has been an increasing trend, courtesy of the internet, for our children and their youth to be tested by the bounds of what is 'right'.

Some of the more interesting debate centres on child stars as they grow into adulthood and begin testing the waters with respect to finding themselves, finding an identity that they are comfortable with, and moving from the relative safety to the less safe world of being an adult. This is exacerbated by the youngsters themselves when they avail themselves of the technology at their disposal and post pictures of themselves. Miley Cyrus as the childhood sweetheart of the Hannah Montana series is a prime example of this need to adult-me-up crossover from childhood star to wanna-be taken seriously adult.

Another 17-year-old looking to have a much more adult image of late is Taylor Momsen. Her recent appearance on the cover of Revolver magazine is tribute to that desire to ratchet-up to the next level the desire to be an adult.

As I was looking for some images that were tame enough to attach to this post, it struck me that once an image is posted to the internet then it forever remains "out there".

I guess the point of this post is really to ponder why there is a need to sexualise our children through the media, how we should deal with it as a community when these youngsters bring it on themselves by posting pictures of themselves, and should this topic be addressed in schools as a means of trying to prevent the most negative outcomes of what seems to be out of control at the moment?

Julia Perez opted out of a political career

It is too bad that Julia Perez opted out of a political career. Just imagine where her political posters and advertising might have gone to from here! First, Pacitan, and then the World!

When it is all said and done she could not be doing any worse than the majority of elected politicians to date!

Putri Patricia photos show

Putri Patricia...

OK. After that little beer diversion, it is back to the mission of satisfying the insatiable desires of those most loyal punters, the porn surfers. Putri Patricia is a sinetron (Indonesian soap opera) and movie star. She has done a few advertisements as well, the most notable of these would be one she did for Vaseline.

However, as these photos show, short skirts and deep sofas are not a match made in heaven. Well, I guess that all depends on whether or not you want to show your panties to the world, doesn't it Rob? Hmmmm, let me ponder for a while on these deep and meaningful ideas. In the meantime, enjoy the sights provided by Ms. Putri Patricia.
